Thread: Snails and Salt

  1. Snails and Salt

So I've often considered employing a few snails to help maintain the glass a bit, as well as adding some fairly pleasing-looking snails to the tank.

I also know that it is important to have some degree of salt in a fish tank (for the fishes sake as well as a potential deterrent for algae).

However, I remember from my experiments as a little child that salt and snails generally don't mix very well, at least for the snail they don't.

Furthermore, there are marine snails, so the salt issue can't be expressed to all snails.

Can someone shed some light on salt and planted tank snails. Is there an appropriate level that a snail keeper should adhere to? Thanks.

    Hi,

Isn't is salt and SLUGS that is an issue?

Anyway, I have kept FRESHWATER fish for many years and do not add any extra salt of any type....Brackish fish is another matter entirely...

Not sure that adding salt to the water will have much benefit but I am no snail expert...except for the hundreds in my tank
    Thanks,

    Gerry.

Salt works just as well on the fleshy part of snails as is does on slugs. I add small amounts of aquarium shrimp. From what i've been able to read, it is generally recommended. I'm not saying that is correct, I'm just saying that is what I've read numerous times.
