Marine plant fest - 05-19-2006, 09:26 PM

This is designed like a marine macro algae course.
We have confirmed space for 8 people and perhaps more if available room is present. We will stay at the Key Largo marine lab which is not far from John Pennecamp State reef park.

Cost will run about 25$ for each night in dorm style lodging and 150$ total for the boating which will be ~20$ ea. If folks want to meet up with a private boating vendor for more isolated islands to do both or either snorkeling and scuba, that can be arranged as well. The facilities are nice and we will spend time after collecting identifying and making herbarium presses, doing water quality and environmental measurements or you sit and swing in the hammocks.

This is a snorkeling trip mainly. There are jellyfish so you may want a wet suit for both the bouyancy and the prevent the rare jellyfish sting, or to prevent sun burn on your back! We typically locate and ID 50 species of Macro algae.

Thursday night is Key West night so we will hang out there and then return late and get up pack up the 16th and make last minute collections.
We will meet at Dive Direct once you get on Key West, it's a big place with a Dive flag sign on the right hand side as you first come to the Keys.

The location of the lab is bit tough to find.

I have most of them on my hard disc, only a few folks ever went and it was namely academic, plenty of folks went on the FW plant fest, that was fun also, DFW aquatic plant folks have some of the events on line.

The Marine part is actually more fun.
But those folks never went on to those for some reason?

You miss out if you skip white sand beaches and 50 species of submersed leafy things you have never kept and hardly ever seen, not to mention huge fish, invert etc etc.

Going to coral reefs and seagrass beds ain't no fun

Tom Barr

It does sound like it was great. I hope to get down to Florida one day for some scuba and snorkeling.
