Boyu glass diffuser - 08-19-2005, 06:33 AM

Anyone have any experience with the Boyu glass/ceramic CO2 diffuser? Does the ceramic disc come out? How long to break in?

I have been using the Eheim diffuser for some time now replacing numerous internal and external reactors along the way. I was using the Eheim with a Clippard needle valve not the supplied check valve. I came across this Boyu which looked a little like the ADA diffuser so I thought I would give it a try. Seems like it still needs to be broken in because gas only escapes from one side. Co2 levels are still nice and high and no bubbles make it to the surface I just like the way my Eheim escaped CO2 across the entire disk. If the disk cannot be removed it seems it might be a little hard to clean.

Thanks

If you soak it fro 1 hour or so in bleach, that should clean it good.

One trick is to sprinkle a thin layer of gravel over the ceramic disc. This will minimise algae growing on and clogging the disc.

Also along thoase same line, a dark low corner with lots of plants covering the top(but still viewable so you make sure it's performing right).

AV8TOR,

Why do you want to replace the Eheim? I'm wondering because I'm considering one for one of my tanks. I was using a Red Sea diffuser which never worked right and presently using a ceramic air stone which works OK.

I am actually going back to the Eheim tomorrow with my tank maintenance. I switched just because of some reading I did as I got the Boyu for nothing. I have found the Eheim to be fantastic although for safety reasons I suggest removing the check valve and use a needle valve. The Eheim is so small it is very easy to hide beside some plants or driftwood as Tom mentioned. The Boyu is larger and more fragile. The Eheim is a piece of cake to clean also.

There are quitre a few new ceramic disc on the market these days.
Combined with a good bubble counter, these can work well but turn them off at night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

They are less controllable/more variable than the reactor methods!!!
