No I haven't Bill. I've kept Pearl, Opaline, dwarf ruby and bred orange gouramis. I like gouramis . Will they fit in with my planted discus tank. I like the idea of the whimple piranha as well. Doing research now. I'm sure I read that Whimples eat algae also................can't get to the details tho'.

I'm getting volumes 2 , 3 and 4 of the Baensch books, maybe they are in them.

They are in that book.
They are not cheap fish.
Get about 15cm max.

Not too big, eat shrimps/small fish though.

Just read up on chocolates Bill. One thing it does mention is that they don't like bright light. That rules out my 41/2 wpg tank then?

Ian, unless you had a lot of floating plants, like watersprite, water lettuce,
etc. They like to hang around under those type of plants, too, at least the
ones I kept in Portland Oregon in 1981. Didn't kill them, but didn't get them
to breed, either

A. Reineckii in Discus Tank? - 11-27-2006, 04:45 AM

I have planted 55g and 155g tanks, the larger one being a discus tank. I have Alternanthera Reineckii in both. In the 55g it's doing great, but in the 155 it is falling apart and looking terrible. Everything else in the 155 (4 sword varieties, ammania gracillis, aponogeton, vals, ludwigias, tiger lotus) is doing great, so I don't think it's a sympton of nutrient deficiency. I use the EI method. Yesterday I built a reactor out of a ViewTainer (which is working great), so I'm trying to increase the CO2 distribution better than just using canister filters and powerheads to spread CO2 around. That may or may not improve the A. Reineckii, though.

Question--can this plant do well at 84-85 degrees in a discus tank? Am I wasting my time trying to grow it in a discus tank, or should I keep trying to troubleshoot the problems? Thanks.

It's not the temps.
It's the CO2.

Obviously if the dosing and the tap are the saem for both tanks, what's left?
Other plants can outcompete plants for CO2, do well while one plant flouders......

Java fern can do this as well.
Prune more often the other plants. Add more Gas etc........
