Java Fern Windelov - care - 11-11-2007, 12:23 PM

Hi all,

I have 3x150w 6500k MH on a 180 with full EI and 30 ppm c02 (4kh drop checker).

+/- 2.75 - 3.0 tsp KN03 3x a week (N)
+/- 3/4 - 1.0 tsp KH2P04 3x a week (P)
+/- 3/4 - tsp (45 ml) Trace 3x a week
50% weekly water change with Prime

Questions:

1. I see some of the lacy tips are brown/black or dis-colored, but the rest of the leave is young/. Any tips to prevent this? I just bought them, so some are like that already. I want them to look nice and green like the others.........

2. Is this too much light for this plant? My 'normal' variety of Java Fern is doing well, but did not want to assume........I can place it so it gets more shade or current.

BTW I also notice the normal variety grows much better when placed in the current than not. I knew this was true for Bolbitis, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised based on what we know now about water current and plant growth.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Gerry.

I haven't had the windelov version but I know that the tips of my java ferns turn brown when they are producing new plantlets. Considering that it's pretty much the same thing as a regular java fern, just a different shape, I wouldn't think that it would have different requirements.

I keep Java Fern Windelov in my tank. It is attached to a "driftwood" log, and has been in several different setups. It started life in a 29 gallon tank with 110 watts of AH Supply light. Then it was shifted to a 45 gallon tank with the same light, followed by a light reduction to 72 watts. Next was a 2.5 gallon nano tank, with a desk lamp over it. And, now it is back in the 45 gallon tank with 72 watts. In all of those settings it has grown very well and looks very healthy. All but the nano tank had CO2 injection at about 30 ppm.

My conclusion is that the plant will grow in just about any setting. I should add that all of those setups included EI fertilizing, which I think is also important. Right now I am seriously thinking about restarting the plant, since it is now just about the size of a soccer ball, if not bigger.

Carissa and VaughnH,

Thanks for the replies. Care is as I thought, but wanted to confirm, just in case......Nice to know it does well in a variety of environments.......
