Doing some custom drifwood by attaching to slate.

Stores sell such combos with metal screw in bottom.

Metal in planted tank doesn't sound right. Are such metal screws "OK", or are there alternatives?

Obviously stainless steel screws are no problem. Even other screws, such as brass or ordinary steel are unlikely to be a problem.

Stainless steel would be ok, they would last forever.
Carbon steel screws would last a very short time I think

Was not aware stainless steel would be fine. Guess I don't know my metals, or chemistry
