I would like to use a carbon filter inline for my replacement water (EI), in my 180. Any idea what would work best? How frequently should the carbon be replaced? I want to declorinate my tap water, that why I want to use it.

You'll want a solid carbon matrix to remove chlorine in a single pass. Honestly I'd use a 1 micron prefilter, and 2 Doulton Ultracarb ceramics Ultracarb ceramic cartridge- Doulton and British Berkefeld water filters depending on your local water quality I'd change the carts every 6 mos to a year at least.

Unless you are doing a continuous water change system, the best way to dechlorinate the replacement water is to add Prime or equivalent to the tank as you add the replacement water. It isn't that expensive, is easy to do, and it is effective.

You can also get a large in line Carbon canister, you can also use a fish aquarium filter and add lots of carbon, same type of thing really.

They make the standard 9 3/4" carbon in line filters for tap water, but these really do not handle larger flows for a 180 gal tank.

US filter and other places and pool stores may have a better solution for an in line GAC filter for you. I have a larger fiberglass canister tank for my filter.

Tom, Please forgive my impertinence, but exactly how large of a GAC filter would you need to remove Chlorine in a single pass ?

Personally I think all the marketing hype for dechlorinators is rubbish as most chlorine will oxidize the ambient organic mater wihtin minutes actually boosting the Redox and lowering the DOC's. Mi Dos Centavos, Prof M
