Iron Chelate - 05-30-2007, 01:14 AM

Hello Everyone!

I purchased some Iron Chelate (10%) from Greg Watson not too long ago. My question is: how should I make a stock solution from it. Any ideas?

Also, I have a 90G 4xT5 w/ pressure CO2 - Fully planted, what amount should I be adding on a regular basis?

Thank in advance for any assistance!

Regards,

JO

5 grams in a 1000ml DI water bottle, dose 15mls 3x a week for Fe.
Or about 1/2 this if you dose TMG, Flourish etc

Mummm.........likely about the same as CMS........see if you can find a dosing cal that has those weights. I'd say about 3/4 teaspoon off hand maybe a tad less, 2/3's etc.

Question 11-23-2007, 03:28 AM

Help me with math. I tried to follow the calculations but I come up with a total ppm added of 0.07 and I thought an Fe of 0.2 to 0.5 ppm was desired.

Fe chelate 10% 5 g into 1 liter = 0.5g/l = 500mg/l = 500ppm = 0.5mg/ml
Adding 45ml/wk = 22.5mg/wk
90 gallon = 340 liters
and
22.5mg/340l = 0.07mg/l or 0.07 ppm

Are my calculations correct or where did I go wrong?

Craig

I do not know, nor does anyone, regardless of what they might claim...........what an optimal level is for a general plant tank, or species for that matter other than perhaps 2-4 species that have had growth analysis done.

For Hydrilla, is was 6.0 ppm of Fe for example.
quite a bit...............

I think eyeballing plant health and growth(via dry weights or general appearance for non destructive methods) by adding progressively more only under optimal non limiting other conditions may you answer this.

You can use ratios etc, you can use other correlative data.........but those make assumptions, none of which allows you to say what is "optimal".
Some aquarist have some hokey notions about what "optimal" means.........
Some means it's what looks best, some, and most agriculturalists/horticulturist go with this one: higher growth rates, some a slowed but good growth form, some aquarist, all it means is less algae, which has nothing to do with plant growth at all...................

So does optimal mean?
Depends on who you ask.........
And....... how you want to define it and what is your goal there.

% means of the total weight added.
So 10% of 5 grams = 500milligrams
Your cal's are correct.

But this is for just for Fe dosing alone, most folks add the general trace that already has Fe in it.

So it adds a bit more Fe in addition to say SeaChem flourish, or TMG.

So if you added say 3x a week TMG at 15mls per dose and 15 mls of this, then you get fairly decent results in most cases.

But.......it depends............as I state above...........
