I have microsword carpet and it is getting a little tall and I keep thinking I would like to cut it down to a uniform height. Will this have an adverse effect?

It should not, new growth will appear.
Just like hair grass.

Keep it from being shadowed by other plants.
Rocks etc are fine, just not other plants and it should stay shorter.
