I am restarting my 150 x 50 x 60 tank. I would like to make it a planted Discus tank and love Corydoras. I am thinking of using 100% Aqua-Medic Volcanit as a gravel.

I have made this choice using various considerations.

1. Color: I would like a very dark color as this enhances the fish color and plants.
2. Grain: I do not think the grain will hurt the soft bellys and fins of the corydoras
3. I woulk like natural plants in my aquarium.

Question: As I have no experience with Volcanit does anybody have an opinion?

Hi,

I'm using it in one of my tanks. Aqua Medic's own advice is to top off with a fine gravel if you intend to keep bottom dwellers such as Corys as the gravel is quite sharp. I put a couple of cms of a fine black gravel over it.

As it's only been running six weeks I can't comment it's efficacy as a substrate but everything seems to be growing in OK.

don't count to much on layering being effective. the finer gravel/sand always works its way to the bottom
