Question Wild plants? - 02-19-2007, 05:01 PM

Got 2 questions...

Ok... I have a field near my house that has mostly crab grass and weeds etc, but there are also some nice little plants that look like something from the anubis family. They are about 6-7" tall. Now about 6 months of the year this field is dry and the soil is usually moist. But during the rainy season I've seen this field hold up to 10-12" of water, a breeding ground for mosquitos! Anyway, pretty much everything in that field survives living under water during this time. I can walk through there and everything nice and green under the water.

So my first question is, is it possible to put such plants into an aquarium? Or is it possible to grow a non-aquatic plant under water, does the plant like suffocate even though there is CO2, Ferts, and Lighting?

Question #2, would it be a "bad" idea to introduce a "wild" plant into a with a tank with store/farm raised plants? What I mean is, is there any steps that I should take to prevent bacteria or parasites or whatever from hitching a free ride?

I have seen some pretty nice looking plants in our local waters here in Florida, I am curious if I could grow some of these plants from a stem/root/seed in a tank. I wish I knew the names for all these plants I'm sure it would help, I will try to get some pictures for id. I wouldn't want to add something to the tank to have to spread like a plague.

You can try such plants, they often are tolerant of submersed conditions for a 1-3 months, but cannot grow well and eventually die.
