Help! Dwarf Hairgrass too tall - 01-14-2007, 02:57 AM

can u guys help me with my dwarf hair grass. its starting to get too tall for a foreground plant. its approximately 4 inches tall. and it is growing up rather than horizontally. this is grown is a 10 gallon tank with a fluorescent bulb 15 W. im also using the DIY co2 and using bigals fertilizers. the plant was purchased 18 days ago. it came is a pot and it divided that pot in two and removed all the foam. both of them are now planted separately.

1. plant is growing too tall. not enough shoots going to the sides.

2. some of the roots and turning a bit brown.

3. some of the shoots look very limp and un-erected. unlike when it was first purchased.

I would increase the lighting somewhat, 1.5wpg from a flouro tube isnt very much at all, the plants may be racing to the surface to get to the brighter light. With T8 tubing, I aim for at least 2.5 wpg if Im adding CO2 as well.

I don't keep hairgrass, but I understand it responds well to being sheared off, like lawn grass. Some people say they get it to spread out by doing that.

Yes, I "mow" my dwarf hairgrass once every couple of months to keep it shorter.

Browning sounds like an issue.
Tall can be due to the lighting from the sounds of it.
Or shading by other plants.
I've done well at 3w/gal with a 10 gal tank, lots of CO2 and good ferts, frequent water changes/ferts will make life easier for you.

Regards,
