Vortex Diatom run hot? - 11-20-2005, 04:22 AM

Do the motors on the Vortex Diatom filters run hot? I tried mine out today and it puts out quite a stink. Smells more like hot paint than motor windings. The smell started pretty much right away and did not really disipate. I'm hoping this is temporary during the 'burn in' period.

Seems to work pretty well though.

Shouldn't smell at all. I use a Vortex frequently and although the motor does get uncomfortably warm, it's never so hot that I can't pick it up and move it around. If it doesn't get better soon, I'd contact someone about a replacement.

Ditto that, same here.

Thanks, I took the dust cover off the motor tonight and noticed a thin coating of oil. I suspect that's what's causing the stink when the motor gets warm. I'll try wiping off the excess oil and see if that helps my nose any.

For future reference, where the heck does one oil this thing anyway?

Just found out today. I emailed vortexporoducts.com (where I got my filter )and they responded:

'Hi,
You should be able to see the oil port to the side of the hose ports. It
will look like the cartoon 'mouse hole', flat on bottom and arched on top.
If there is no oil port then you will need to lean the pump over almost
upside down and put a few drops on the motor shaft and let it run down into
the motor. Only a few drops every 6 months.
Thank You'

Mine had the little 'mouse hole' port. A single squirt of oil was all it took to make the noisiness go away.
