shrimp vs. Koralia

Anybody had any experience with baby shrimp (tigers & RCSs) and Koralia Nanos & #1s? I'm wondering if the babies will get mutilated by these Koralias. I wouldn't mind an occasional death, but surely would not want many. Not sure why I want to keep breeding these things, I have way more than I need (6 tigers have turned into 30 or 40 in just a couple of months!).

If the Koralias would be baby shrimp killers, plan B is to go to Maxi-jet 400 powerheads (106 gph) and put a pre-filter on them. Perhaps that would be a smarter route to take, but I really enjoy the gentle flow of the Koralias. They move quite a bit of water, especially considering their gentle flow.

Thank you in advance.

I've just gone from a maxi Mp400 to a Koralia1. No idea if its mashing the cherry babies up. There are too many to count. If it is then I won't be losing too much sleep as they breed like rabbits on viagra.

Thanks, bibbels, nice thread -- though there still doesn't seem to be a definitive answer on the shrimp babies vs. Koralias. If I lose a few, no big deal. If I stop getting new babies altogether, I'll know something bad is up. When very young, my baby shrimp actually spend a lot of time at the top of my aquarium on equipment (I think they feel safer up there), so I'm fairly certain that my babies will convene on top of my Koralia. The intake flow on Koralias is not super strong -- that is for sure.

I would ignore the advice in that thread. lol

My Koralia doesn't suck plants in. It only sucks lose dead leaves in.

It doesn't suck anyfish in and as stupid as fish are they purposely swim into the flow to get blown a foot away and then come back for another go. lol

I actually see adult shrimp walking over the intake section cleaning it and then they swim off!!!

I would say the intake of it being so large means that the 1500lph Koralia1 is much safer for them than the intake of my 700lph filter!!!

When you think about this, it makes a lot of sense. The inlet area for a Koralia is very large compared to the outlet stream, so the flow velocity through any part of the inlet must be slow. And, my guppies take the world record for sheer stupidity, but I continue to have baby guppies everywhere. Those little idiots are so stupid they work very hard to make it into the overflow on my tank so they can swim outdoors through about 10 feet of hose and enjoy acting like penguins!

I have two #1's and do notice some plant leaves getting sucked in. I also had a bn swim into the outflow and get stuck and died poor guy.

It was all your fault for not giving that BN a proper education:D

Yes VaughnH I know I should have explained to him better that its not a good idea to swim into the hydor and die, I thought it was kinda odd when I woke up and seen him half in half out. It is kinda funny now, I really liked him he did a good job cleaning the glass. Should have left the gaurd thing on so let this be a lesson to everyone leave the gaurd thing on.

Just came across this. I had my BN do the same thing, but I must have caught him in time - microns from the impeller, he was just hanging out inside the upper chamber, enjoying the back tickle. I turned it off, unscrewed the chamber, and dumped him back in the tank. He spent the entire next day and night plastered to the mopani, motionless, but now he's back like a champ.

I finally figured out how to get the fish guard and directional nozzle to stay on. Reduces my flow somewhat, but in my 20H, this isn't really a problem, as I'm still getting great current.

shouldn't reduce the flow any. Still the same just slightly directed. doesn't look to me from the design that it would be that effective really but I use it anyway. Didn't like the look of the open front of it. especially with stupid Otos that are forever deciding to clean my filter inlet and then getting stuck!!
