Angels Not Eating Their Eggs! - 01-04-2008, 08:45 PM

Have a 125gal planted tank. A pair of angelfish have laid a bunch of eggs (may 300 ?) and have not eaten them!
The parent pair have aggressively kept away all other tank residents.
Now there are about 30-50 eggs left with little wiggling tails, eyes a little sacks.
That not the end of it. Now this last bunch has been transferred, by taking them in their mouth and sticking them to a Vallisneria leaf!

Since the eggs developed tails they were constantly falling off the glass-cleaning- magnet, where they were first laid, and quickly the father (or mother) takes each in their mouth and spits it back unto the surface. Sometimes repeating this until they stick .
At first I thought they were eating them.

I guess they are going to die for lack of something to feed on.

Anybody with similar?

It is normal behaviour for the parents to move their young from place to place until they are free swimming. They will then guard the young for a period of time.

You need to raise some baby brine shrimp or something as a first food or they will indeed starve.

Parents may be more likely to eat after they become free swimming.

You may want to transfer them to a separate tank with no parents or other fish to raise them.

Many sources for angel breeding out there.....Young will grow fast........

Library or book store, or the web is a good place to start.

Congrats and good luck.

Gerry.
