I've recently gotten out of the saltwater reef hobby and will be starting up a freshwater planted tank soon. I've been reading a bunch about this stuff and have bought some of the equipment I'm going to need already. I've had a low tech planted tank for a couple years that does alright, but i'm going to be going with pressurized CO2 on this one.

I've read that the less light on the tank means the demand for CO2 will be lower. So, that being said, I've got a two bulb 30" T5NO fixture and a single 17w T8 fixture that I was planning on using. I've also got a 4 bulb (24w each) T5HO fixture with one reflector for all of the bulbs (not individual reflectors) that I could raise about 6-8 inches above the tank that I could use. I'm looking to not be in the really high light area but still have some moderate growth from my plants. The tank is 24" tall x 30" x 18", and i'm going to have 2-3 inches of eco-complete substrate. Also, the T5HO fixture would go in a canopy and I could put some metal window screen under it if need be to block some of the light. Any suggestions on which setup to use would be appreciated.

Next question. As I said, I'll be using eco-complete for my substrate and thought about putting some osmocote plus under it. Is there anything else I should add to the eco-complete? I know the earthworm castings and mineralized top soil is a good idea, but there is no way that I can DIY those things at this time.

Also, I'll be doing the dry start method as I'm going to be trying some hair grass, glosso, or something similar for a ground cover. Are there any particular plants or types of plants that I should not put in the tank until it's filled with water?

I'll get to the CO2 questions once the plants have grown in from the dry start method.

Thanks in advance.
Eric

I'm sure the answer is somewhere in the forum, but I can't seem to find it. I'm hoping someone point me to it.

I'm new to the forum. I'm wanting to set up a tank with low light, no CO2, no real soil, with occasional dosing as Tom's suggests in his 3/28/2005 post regarding his basic method, but I'm still a little confused

1) Tom mentions onyx sand, leonardite, and peat. How thick of layer do I need of each and in what order? And, can I put my decorative gravel on top or will that disrupt the system? I realize there are many combinations that have worked for people, but being new I don't not how to judge among them. Is the a generic formula that's good to start with for a first tank?

2) Also, Tom mentions that one problem with soil is that is contains NH4, but wouldn't peat have the same issues with NH4 as soil?

:confused:

Hi,

My previous tank was not successful, some of the plants were failed to grow well and I've struggled for 7 months in vain until I recently decided to reset all things but basically almost all the scape and plants position remain the same.

Here it goes :

pH = 5.8-7.0.

kH = 0-1dkH.

gH = 3-4dgH.

ADA AS I 1 bag capped with ADA AS II 1/2 bag.

Canister filter 1500L/H with surface skimmer.

Additional powerhead 800L/H for extra circulation.

Pressurized CO2 with external reactor up 5-6bps, DC with 4dkH solution shows lime green 4-5 hours after CO2 has been turn on.

Temp = 27-29C, mostly at 28C.

Tank 80x30x40cm.

Lighting 2x21watt T5NO 8 hours/day.

The things that I make correction in hope for better growth environment are :

Increase the CO2 from previous 4-5bps to 5-6bps.

Change to stronger additional powerhead from previous 400L/H to 800L/H.

Re-position the input and output of main filter and change the output nozzle with vertical position spray bar in hope for better CO2 distribution.

Mixing 6500K bulb and 4000K bulbs.

Adding substrate bacteria (Bacter 100).

Day 7

I was providing O2 at night in hope for living the bacteria through aeration.

Day 16

Aerator has been removed because some of the plants have showed photosynthesis activity.

Moderate surface agitation made from an extra 800L/H PH.

The water has been clear after about 1 week but it is still yellowish due to AS I thus I am still using the activated carbon to reduce the yellowing. The pictures above were taken right after the 50-70% of 2 times a week of WC, so you are not noticing yellowish.

Plants list :

Microsorum pteropus 'Neddle Leaf'.

Anubias barteri var. nana 'Petite'.

Taxiphylum sp. Flame.

Rotala sp. Green.

Hemianthus micranthemoides.

Hemianthus callitrichoides.

Didiplis diandra.

The only left Pogostemon helferi.

Comparison plant Tonina sp. Belem.

Noted that the only Tonina was intentionally been put beside the Hemianthus micranthemoides to see if the Tonina will grow to make it becomes a comparison plant since I read somewhere that it is quite a demanding plant in both nutrient and CO2 if not light.

So far, the only stem Tonina has been sending 2 new side shoots and you can see it is growing taller but the HM are still struggling or adapting or adjusting and some of them have melted. Is it true that HM is hard water preferred plant so it is not suitable to try to grow it in pH reducing soil such as ADA AS?

Suggestion and comment are very welcome. Thank you.

Hello everyone, firstly I'd like to thank Tom for creating such an amazing wealth of information. After having read a number of his articles and an even larger number of his replies to questions posted by newbies like me, I feel at great ease with the advice offered on this forum. The articles just seem to make a lot more sense to me than many other sites I have been to and the progression from complete novice into somebody that is ready to embark on there first planted tank adventure is easy to follow and well mapped out. Particularly the reassurance that everyone was in this position once and that I should not feel afraid to 'experience' rather than just be lost in a maze of acronyms and chemistry straight away is a breath of fresh air.

I have a 150 gallon aquarium measuring 72x20x24 inches that I would like to make a planted community set up. I have decided that a low tech method would be best for me however I am still deciding whether I will be dosing excel or not. Primarily this will come down to the water changes involved as 50 percent each week would be unmanageable for me on a tank this size. However at 25 percent a week is very doable. Like I said I would like a community setup containing tetras, rasboras and maybe dwarf cichlid as well as hardy, easy to grow plants like hygrophila, ambulia, crypts, rotala, amazon swords etc. I already have 2 Eheim 2217 canister filter which I intend to use on this tank. My plan for lighting (which is very subject to change based upon the advice I receive here) will be 2 HOT5 fixtures with 2x39w bulbs in each for a total of 156w or just over 1wpg. I will be using Eco Complete substrate. My plan for fertilizers would be to use KNO3 and KH2PO4 as well as equilibrium as stated in Tom's article. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings!
I am from Croatia an I've been reading your forum for a long time and I think it's really great!
I have a cichlide aquarium but I also have a small tank (20 litres) with Hm; Riccia Fluitans, Anubias Nana and Vesicularia Dubyana. I dont' have a complete substrate but only gravel at the bottom, and I add 0,5 ml of EasyCarbo an 0,2 ml of Florena per day. In the past week I spotted GSA in the tank. Light is 11W, 6500K, 8 hours a day.
I'm looking for advise because I have read here about Tom's subject on NonCO2 tanks; should I change everything, add the soil for plants and then gravel? Can I add KNO3 and KH2PO4 with the soil without adding CO2, because of low light and short light period? What do you recommend, how many ppm of nutrients?
Tnx in advance,
Cannibal (Dario)
