Glass Diffuser Bubble Size - 03-07-2007, 07:14 PM

Anyone got pictures of what the bubble size is from a glass diffuser that is working well?

I just got a Rhinox glass diffuser and its putting out lots of bubbles, but the majority seem to be coming from the outer radius of the diffuser rather than evenly across the entire surface.

Some of the bubbles are not what I'd call fine as well and I've heard that one working properly should be giving off many fine bubbles. I'm not sure if there is a difference or if my idea of "fine bubble size" is different than other's definition of fine...

I'll try to take a pic of the diffuser in action tonight.

Bear in mind that any O2 in the system will not exit the disk as fine as CO2 will do, it takes mine ages to get rid of all the O2. Im about to receive the same diffuser as you so itll be interesting to compare.

I also found soaking new ones in 50:50 bleech/water solution for a few hours seems to sort out big bubbles quite a bit. Dunno why it would do, maybe the disks get a bit clogged with dust when theyre cut or something.

I've noticed that if I locate the diffuser higher in the tank I get smaller bubbles. Has anyone else seen this or are my eyes playing tricks on me?


Also, I found that if I locate the diffuser near the intake of my Penguin hang-on-back filter it sucks almost all the bubbles into the intake.

Is it a good idea to do that or will I loose most of the CO2 in the filter return to the tank?

the lower you place it in the tank the more efficient it will be as the bubbles have further to travel before they reach the surface, this will give them more time to desolve before they reach the current or surface.

It may be just the viewing angle. If I want to check how far the bubbles are getting spread around the tank, I usually stoop down and look at my tank at sort of an up angle. Then I can see all the smaller bubbles. Looking straight on or at a slight down angle, I only see the larger bubbles.
