Ferts for a Plant Filter....? - 10-19-2006, 03:58 AM

Just needing to know how to add ferts for a setup that has no plants except for a 30g plant filter full of Hygro polysperma....?

The setup is the main tank (40g, no Plants), Sump (40g, no plants), Plant filter(30g, Plant-only).

I have fully planted tanks and I understand the overall fert deal. What's confusing me is how much P and K and micros to dose for the plants to remain healthy and remove nitrates. If it was Just a 30g planted tank: I would dose 2ppm of P and about 20ppm of K. BUT its a 30g plant filter inside a 110g system ----So, how would I dose this?

TIA

You can dose when you do the water changes directly to the plant filter.

There's no flow for a few minutes, the longer, the better.

I'd add about 5-10ppm of KNO3 once a week.
1 ppm of PO4
10mls of Traces.

Etc...........

You'll note you are after a balance of low nutrients, but not so low the plants suffer. So that is a balance.

Ok, so I'm assuming that you are saying dose the entire 110g to 1ppm of P, etc, Correct?

No, just the 40 gal with the weeds.

You will have a good sized fish load in the other tank right?
That should feed the plant filter.

You can add a bit more ferts for the plants there, but not that much, the rest of the tank will have no draw of nutrients.............
