Am I the only one who feels that is sort of cheating? I spend a lot of money on my tank, but talk about having unlimited resources!!! I love the cookie sheets of HC, and the massive pile of rock to choose from. Just seems to be different from what I think most of us on here are trying to do, even if our tanks don't look as perfect as his I think we have a lot more personally invested in ours than he does.

When setting up a tank, it's nice to chose the hardscape first and have all the plants you can stand available.

Even here, I typically 100% time never have all the plants I need and end up using dither plants till the others fill in.

You can never have too much wood or rock for scaping........I'm always amazed at few pieces will work well in a particularly spot.
Even with several tons of hardscape material.

Yeah, one cannot ever have too much hardscape. I see a nice rock I buy it, irrespective if I have a use for it or not, they will come in handy. Ok, I do not have as many rocks as he has, but I will try. :)

Regarding how much stuff he has available, it is like saying how much stuff a mechanic has on his shop. This is his job, so it makes sense that he has it all ready to scape, especially when it is going into a video that is used to market his company.

Should we do the same? Maybe we should, plants are cheap, grow them emersed if you need to have lots to use. :)

Plants are cheap though. The average pot/bunch of plants is often less than $2 here.

What I noted was low flow, MH lighting and uneven Co2 distribution and yet his tanks flourish.

Actually we are only seeing a small part of the whole process. There maybe more flow, more co2, even less light, etc.

Ada soil is nice, full of ferts so that also helps!

I have to agree with you, rarely if ever is the inside of the cabinet shown and what is actually ran along with the filters. Is there a heater attached inline, pump, uv, etc... The lights are a huge factor but hardly ever discussed. There are many variables involved but if one stick to basic horticulture principles, anyone can be successful.

Granted as we learn more we start to implement our own personal touch, sort of speak, to the process. A little tweak here, a little adjustment there and without noticing we develop a habit of doing things. Some good and some bad. The bad is always hard to break.

That being said there's no magic involved, we all know that. Well maybe just a little, The New Supplement Amano's Secret Formula. ;)

All business, the Japanese can be serious people. But it is a "formal" business event, not like a group of hobbyists getting together to scape a tank and share some beers.

I would have been grinning from ear to ear to have been there. Those stones were quite impressive. Oh, to have half a mountain worth of hardscape and an entire aquatic nursery at my disposal.

Well I have a mountain of hardscape, ok more like a small pile next to Amano's, and a nursery, just a few hydroponics boxes. It is helpfull. I can grow in there about 200 pots of plants and they turn just like the Wabi Kusa, because I use only AS powder.
In my current scape I used 75 pots of HC and 25 pots of Lilaeopsis and I have placed them just like Amano does with the WK. It is really nice and easy this way.

When I saw him in denmark he seemed a really jovial guy, although the guys around him (the staff) looked a bit nervous and contrived. Maybe he gives them a hard time.

Funny enough during the show there was something wrong with the scape layout tools, and when he took the guys to the back we all thought that he was going to give them a hard time, as the wireless speaker was still on. I don't understand Japanese but the tone of voice was calm and collected.

I also found him to be very sure of himself, but if one knows what's he's doing then it makes sense.

He's a good guy really, from the little I've seen.

Those are his apprentices first, and his staff second. They are assuredly very serious in everything they do under Amanos watch and guidance. Think back to the Karate Kid film. Wash on, Wash off. Co2 in, Algae out. If he ever gives them a hard time, they are fully expecting it and prepared for it. I highly doubt their relationships are simply employer and staff. They are mentor and student.

I agree, it's clear to me that they are serious about what they are doing, and they are being "happy in their work". I've seen the "moss chopping" part of that video also, they are having a good time no doubt!
