Hi Brian,
The only form of Glutaraldehyde (aside from Excel) is Cidex, used principally by hospitals for cold sterilization. It is wicked bad stuff, so be very careful with the stuff. :)
A source I know of is http://www.afge.org/Index.cfm?Page=Glutaraldehyde. You may be able to find this in medical supply or even janitorial supply houses. ;)
Detritus Mulm bought some a while back, we have not heard from him since.

I have never used or handled Cidex, I agree it would be nice to find a cost effective alternative, but going blind doesn't appeal to me either.
Good luck,

He's still thread stalking around. I was starting to get a little worries myself. "Hi guys, I just got this new chemical that can burn your lungs out" followed by silence a week later is a great way to leave us all wondering though ;)
The cidex is diluted; I believe the type you'd want is cidex plus as 3.4% glutaraldehyde. People with all of 6 month certificates handle this stuff in hospitals all the time to sterilize things. A family member of mine worked with one person who had the wonderful idea of putting it in a spray bottle...

Well Im very cautious with fertilizer, Muriatic acid and all that stuff that I use in the aquarium. Using a sprabottle to dose is great!!!
I can experiment having 17 planted tanks.

Cidex Plus is what I used on my 30 gallon for the longest time. Cut it in half with DI water and dosed as per Excel dosages. 5ml per 50 gallons. I couldn't tell the difference between Excel and Cidex as far as growth.

Hi All,
Cidex Plus, a 3.4% alkaline glutaraldehyde, is quite readily available. :)

I just ordered a quart, I will give it a try. :o I have 3 plus liters of Excel on hand and tanks I can try side by side.
ordloh: ? No doubt you will tell me I am wrong thereby making Tom Barr happy, but as far as I know muriatic acid is Hydrochloric acid, which is the solution of hydrogen chloride (HCl) in water.

For the Trace mix to prevent fungus growth.
I use Excel instead, but HCL works also.
